Candidates examine the national and state English/ Language Arts standards related to listening, speaking, reading, writing, and visual communication. Candidates explore methods, materials, and resources appropriate for cultural, ethnic, and diverse learning styles of all learners to meet the language arts and reading standards. Candidates investigate strategies for integrating technology into K-12 language arts and literacy instruction and teaching strategies appropriate to the level of instruction. Candidates apply research based effective practices for assessing learner progress and for using technology to improve reading, writing and communication. Field experiences are required and integrated into the course. Prerequisite Course(s): Prerequisite: Take EDPC 605 and one course in this group: EDIT 603 or EDPC 603 |

Candidates explore a variety of speaking, listening, writing, and viewing materials from a wide range of sources as they enact and prepare middle childhood and adolescent student work in the context of New York State and National Council of Teachers of English standards. Candidates create and carry out exercises that address the full range of thinking skills and intelligences, while exploring opportunities to integrate literacy and composition across the curriculum. Current research, theory, and best practice guide candidates as they explore different approaches to literacy and communication, and determine appropriate methods of assessment, giving special attention to Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students and others with restricted command of the language. This course introduces pre-service English language arts teachers/or in-service Childhood Education teachers to the fundamentals of theory and practice for teaching English language arts in middle schools. The course is designed to prepare English/language arts teachers to understand, respect and effectively facilitate diverse learners in language development, reading, writing, communication, and literature. instructional strategies, technology resources, and assessments for the reluctant readers will be examined. Course work includes current issues and recent developments in curriculum and methodology in the teaching of middle school English language arts. Ten hours field observation and field experience are required and integrated into the course. |

This course deepens and extends the knowledge, skills, and dispositions gained in Teaching English in the Middle School Using Technology (I). The course is designed to prepare English/language arts teachers to understand, respect and effectively facilitate diverse learners in language development, reading, writing, communication. and literature. Specifically, it will prepare teachers' necessary knowledge and skills (listening, speaking, writing, reading, fundamentals of literature, and language and literature) to teach effectively in middle schools. Course work includes current issues and recent developments in curriculum and methodology in the teaching of middle school English language arts. EDLA 638 | Intro to Linguistics for Bilingual & TESOL Education | 3 | College of Arts & Sciences |
This course will provide an introduction to the scientific study of language, with a specific emphasis on areas relevant for bilingual and TESOL education. These areas will include phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Topics in linguistics related to issues of first and second language acquisition and language development and teaching will receive special emphasis. Theoretical and applied linguistic issues will be discussed through the analysis of English language output. Candidates will identify core elements of selected linguistic theories, to describe common components of selected language systems and to relate this knowledge to the linguistic characteristics they encounter in the second language classroom. 10 hours field observation and experience are required and integrated into the course. |
