Dongsei Kim is an award-winning architect, urbanist, and educator. He is an Associate Professor (tenured) and Chair of the Department of Architecture (Long Island campus) at the School of Architecture and Design.

Dongsei's research explores architecture and urbanism's relationship to nation-state borders across multiple scales. It investigates the notions of "inclusion" and "exclusion" and how "us" and "them" are defined through spatial practices. His work on the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) has gained international recognition through reputable publications and exhibitions. He is the author of "Drawing Hwa-Chaeng: Mapping Contested Territories for Imagination" (Seoul: Jeongye-C Publishers, 2022), a critical exploration of creative mapping in contested border spaces. His research has been featured in prominent exhibitions, including the Golden Lion award-winning "Crow's Eye View" at the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale (2014), "Future School" at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale (2021), and various exhibitions at the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism (SBAU, 2023, 2019, 2017).

Dongsei's writings have been published in recognized journals such as Topos and Volume, and books including Riverine Landscape, Urbanity, and Conflict (Routledge, 2023), Chandigarh Rethink (ORO Editions, 2017), and Critical Landscapes (UC Press, 2015). Further, Domus, The New York Times, Dwell Magazine, Vox, and CBS News, among others, have referenced his work.

As an engaged speaker, he has presented his research at institutions such as the Storefront for Art and Architecture, the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), the Korea Society, the Humanities Institute at Stony Brook University, the National Gallery of Victoria, the State Library of Queensland, Columbia University, Pennsylvania State University, and the University of California, Irvine, and others.

With over 20 years of teaching experience at respected international institutions, including Columbia University, Carleton University, RMIT University, Korea University, Kyung Hee University, Monash University, and Victoria University of Wellington (VUW), he brings a wealth of knowledge to his academic roles. Professionally, Dongsei has practiced architecture in Wellington, Seoul, and New York. He earned his registration as an architect with the New Zealand Registered Architects Board (NZRAB) in 2007 and is an architect member of the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA). He earned his Master in Design Studies with Distinction from Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD), a Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University, GSAPP, and a professional Bachelor of Architecture with Honors from Victoria University of Wellington.

In recognition of his contributions, The Korea Society named him the Sherman Family Emerging Scholar in 2018, and he currently co-chairs the Korean Studies Seminar at Columbia University's University Seminar (2023–present). His recent honors include the Presidential Excellence Award for Student Engagement in Research, Scholarship, or Creative Activities at New York Tech (2023), the New Faculty Excellence Award at New York Tech's SOAD (2023), and being selected as one of the inaugural Honors College Fellows at New York Tech (2024).
