Cathy Bernard specializes in composition theory, speech communication, and literature and medicine. Her doctoral dissertation, "Dickens and Victorian Dream Theory," examined Dickens's literary dreams against the backdrop of 19th-century medical and scientific thought. Bernard began her college teaching at Queens College just when CUNY launched its open admissions policies, and composition theory was a burgeoning field.

She served as writing coordinator at the New York City campus for over two decades. Most recently, she has taught writing to adult learners at New York Tech enrolled in the Next Step Verizon program. Bernard continues to find the teaching of writing at all levels to be a challenging and exciting field.
