Diamando Afxentiou holds a Ph.D. degree from West Virginia University with a specialization in Labor Economics. She received her M.A. degree in economics from The New School for Social Research and her B.S. degree in economics from the College of Staten Island, City University of New York.

Her research interest is in the area of labor economics and public policy. Afxentiou has made contributions that impact on the academic community in the area of Teenage Pregnancy and Wage Polarization through papers published in competitive journals in this domain space (e.g. Journal of Family and Economic Issues, Journal of Business and Economic Studies). She has also made contributions through service to the academic community, as recognition of her scholarship, through her inclusion as a reviewer and discussant for several academic conferences (e.g. Academy of International Business / Multinational Finance Society).

Her research in economics also resulted in contribution to teaching and learning by way of the receipt of a National Science Foundation grant. She also holds the title of Associate Dean in the School of Management from June 2007 to present, responsible for
