In addition to his current role at New York Tech, John Kappenberg was assistant professor and coordinator of the Leadership and Technology program at New York Tech. He has taught educational leadership and doctoral advisement as an adjunct associate professor at Hofstra University, Adelphi University, Argosy University, and Touro College. As Assistant Superintendent for Research, Planning and Quality, he led the Sewanhaka Central High School District's Five-Year Strategic Planning Program continuously for 18 years.

Kappenberg has been vice president of the Long Island Chapter of the New York State Council on Exceptional Children (CEC) and media director for the Long Island Regional Task Technical Assistance Team (RTAT). He has been a director for the New York State Governor's Excelsior Award Program (Empire State Advantage), chairperson of the Education Sector, and a senior examiner for a number of educational and governmental organizations that have applied for the Governor's Excelsior Award. He worked for 15 years in network television, and produced more than 150 instructional, motivational and public information video tapes and DVDs for schools and universities.

He received a fellowship to the Oxford University Roundtable of Superintendents and Principals, the Excellence in Educational Leadership Award from the University Council for Education, and numerous awards for Excellence in Journalism from the New York State School Public Relations Association.

Recent publications include Mathematics, the Common Core, and RTI: An Integrated Approach to Teaching in Today's Classrooms, (2013), and The Complete Guide to RTI: An Implementation Handbook (2012), Corwin publications, with Dolores Burton. He is author of Planning for the Future: What Parents Need to Know—A Program for Parents of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Mood and Anxiety Disorders, ADHD and NLD, published by Campus for Successful Learning, Inc. Other writings include Keeping Current with Increasingly Common Diagnoses of ADHD, ADD, Autism, Asperger's, NLD, OCD and Tourette's, published by Lorman Education Services, and A Framework for Excellence in Education, published by Empire State Advantage.
