Jim Murdy holds the Ph.D. in Tourism from the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut. He previously attained the Bachelor of Science degree in Philosophy and the Master of Science Degree in Leisure Behavior, also from the University of Connecticut.
Previously, Murdy served as the coordinator (2001-2005) and then director (2005–2007) of the Hospitality and Tourism Programs at the University of New Haven, where he successfully transitioned the curriculum to reflect current industry and AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) standards. He also created and directed the Hazell Center for Hospitality Sales and Event Management, a funded center delivering academic program support, student advancement activities, and professional services. Prior to that he held the positions of Associate Director for the Laboratory for Leisure, Tourism and Sport at the University of Connecticut (1997-2001), during which the Lab received multiple contracts from brand research and tourism organizations located throughout the Northeast.
In addition to his administrative roles, Murdy works to support student, scholarly, and industry initiatives. He is an active member of the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality. Through this organization, he actively engages students, faculty, and industry leaders to create a dynamic learning environment that meets the needs of all stakeholder groups. He is editor of the Proceedings of the 2003 Northeastern Recreation Research Symposium, and the author of over 25 scholarly articles, books, book chapters, reviews, and presentations. His areas of specialization include tourist behavior, research methodology, and assessment.
