Prior to joining New York Tech full time first as an assistant professor (1977-1989) and then associate professor (1989-present), John C. Ringen was an adjunct instructor at New York Tech, SUNY Agricultural and Technical College, Dowling College, and Suffolk County Community College. He received his Ph.D. and M.A. in analytical chemistry from the City University of New York (CUNY). He is a member of the American Chemical Society, American Association of University Professors, and Society of the Sigma Xi.

- Received the "Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year" award from New York Tech, April 2010
- Received the "Award for Outstanding Teaching" from the NYIT School of Health Professions, Behavioral and Life Sciences for the 2007–2008 academic year
