John O. Smith is an educator, designer, and artist who has worked as a leader and director for many education and arts organizations. Before joining the NYIT-Beijing program, he taught graphic design for over 15 years in the United States. His teaching experience includes all levels of Graphic Design, Art Foundation, Design History, and Digital Media. He also works as a graphic designer, focusing on developing ideas and media to successfully communicate client message. Smith has been a designer and art director for museums, publications, marketing/promotions agencies, sign and exhibit graphics, and identity projects. He owned and operated a design business, and served as creative director for a full-service design shop.
Smith creates art in a variety of media, including book art, photography, sculpture, and performance, and his artwork explores language, repetition, and social structures. He often collaborates with artists and organizations; developing projects through creative dialog and process. Smith’s work has been exhibited and presented around the world, and has been collected by public and private collectors.
