Karen Poole, Ph.D. received her doctor of philosophy in biological sciences from George Washington University. After earning her Ph.D., she completed postdoctoral training at Stony Brook University, where she taught anatomy, followed by an assistant professorship at Central Michigan University's College of Medicine.
Poole’s research uses phylogenetic systematic methods to infer evolutionary relationships, particularly among ornithischian dinosaurs, which are characterized by a pelvic structure that is superficially similar to that of birds. In particular, she is interested in the evolution of the hands and wrists of iguanodontian dinosaurs, herbivorous dinosaurs that lived from the Middle Jurassic to Late Cretaceous, as they shifted from a bipedal to a quadrupedal posture. She uses CT scanning to reconstruct and visualize osteological fossil features.
