Karen Sheflin is a board certified Family Practitioner. She received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) in 2001. She completed her internship, family practice residency, and chief residency at Long Beach Medical Center in Long Beach, N.Y. in 2004. She worked briefly for St. John's Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway, N.Y. as a preceptor for the Family Medicine Residency Program. She joined the Family Medicine Department at NYITCOM as a full-time clinical teaching faculty member in May 2006.

Sheflin precepts third-year medical students during patient care hours in both the Family Health Care Center in Central Islip and the Academic Health Care Center in Long Island. She served on the steering committee and is a preceptor at the student-run Community Free Clinic. In addition, she teaches first- and second-year osteopathic medical students in the Doctor Patient Relationship course (a clinical skills course). Since 2014, she has served as the Director of the Émigré physician program (EPP), a four-year program for internationally trained physicians to retrain as doctors of osteopathic medicine in the United States.
