Michael Walsh completed his undergraduate studies in 2005 in biomedical sciences at Lancaster University in England. He then continued at Lancaster to complete his Ph.D. in biological sciences (bioengineering research focus), researching the application of vibrational spectroscopic approaches to monitor cells and diagnose cancer. In 2008, he was the first Carle Foundation Hospital-Beckman Institute postdoctoral fellow at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He established his own research lab, the Spectral Pathology Lab, as a junior faculty member at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2013 (Department of Pathology) and later in 2020 at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire (Department of Materials Science and Bioengineering).
