Ariel Steinlauf chose to attend NYIT-New York City because he liked the energy and the opportunities available in Manhattan; however, he’s not complaining about his summer internship with Apple in California. “I got to work with scientists and engineers at the top of their fields,” says the computer science major who plans to graduate in May 2019. “As an added bonus, the weather out there is amazing!”

A native of Lawrence, N.Y., Steinlauf has appreciated the interesting courses available in NYIT’s computer science program, as well as the guidance offered by Career Services. The career fairs organized by the department have been beneficial to Steinlauf, who is exploring his options in the software field. While at NYIT, he has been involved with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) organization in Manhattan and currently serves as the group’s webmaster.

As part of his internship at Apple, Steinlauf worked with developers of the open source frameworks ResearchKit and CareKit. “Working at Apple has been an eye-opening experience,” he says. Steinlauf encourages those interested in pursuing computer science to give it a try and not be dissuaded by mistakes you may make along the way. “Never be afraid of failure, because the next opportunity will almost always be better. Failure makes you stronger and your next opportunity is bound to be a success,” he says

When things get stressful in work or life, seek a diversion to clear your head. “I find walking my dog to be a relaxing past time,” Steinlauf says, “It lets me disconnect for a bit and I think it’s fun.”
