Homecoming: Bigger, Safer in 2020

COVID, COVID go away. Come back another day. New York Tech wants to play!

The community may not be able to get together physically, but New York Tech’s Homecoming 2020 will go on as planned—virtually. Alumni, students, faculty, and staff can connect through a variety of online activities from October 19 through 25.

There will also be a number of opportunities throughout the week to support the Bear Bytes initiative, which provides students on the Long Island and New City York campuses with healthy food options as well as health and wellness support.

The New York Tech community is encouraged to donate canned goods or non-perishable items for the  newly launched Grizzly Cupboard food pantry throughout the week. Collection times are:

  • Long Island Campus (Student Activities Center, 2nd Floor)
    Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • New York City Campus (26 W 61st St., M04)
    Tuesday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The events listed below are open to all alumni, students, faculty, and staff. (Note: all times are listed are EST.)

Virtual 5K
The Virtual 5K Walk/Run/Bike/Swim encourages physical activity and friendly competition in a socially-distanced environment. Your $15 registration fee will directly benefit Bear Bytes. All participants will also receive a commemorative participation medal. Additional swag items will be awarded to the top finishers in six categories as well as for your activity on social media. Times will be accepted from noon on October 19 to 5 p.m. on October 24. Winners will be announced on Facebook Live on October 25.

NYIT-Vancouver Campus Food Drive

As COVID-19 has hit so many communities around Vancouver, the New York Tech community wants to help. We will be collecting items for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank during Homecoming 2020. Bring any non-perishable food, such as canned food, pasta, rice, and granola bars, to the donation boxes at both the BTC and Downtown Vancouver campus. Donations will be accepted from October 16 through October 24.

NYIT-Vancouver Hosts Online Yoga
12:30 – 1:30 p.m.
This Zoom yoga session is the perfect way to start your Homecoming 2020 week. A calming of the mind and a full body stretch will set you up for success. Equipment or prior experience is not required.

Cooking with Carmen
6 – 7:30 p.m.
Carmen Marmo-Savinetti, senior major gift officer in development and alumni relations, will demonstrate how to make a hearty pasta e fagioli.

Golden+ Alumni Coffee Conversations (Classes 1971 and older)
9 – 10 a.m.
Brew a cup of coffee, or tea, and connect with classmates and fellow alumni as we kick off the Golden Anniversary year for the Class of 1971.

NYIT-Vancouver Hosts Virtual Art Therapy
1 – 2 p.m.
Art Therapy combines the creative process and psychotherapy, facilitating self-exploration and understanding. Psychologist Rijuta Banerjee will help you explore and express your emotions through art. All you need is a piece of paper and a pencil for this workshop.

Thursday, October 22

Coffee With President Hank Foley & Provost Junius Gonzales
10 – 11 a.m.
Alumni and parents: Brew a cup of coffee or tea and join President Hank Foley, Ph.D., and Provost Junius Gonzales, M.D., M.B.A., for Q&A session.

Drive-In Movie: Hocus Pocus
6 – 8 p.m.
In celebration of the Halloween season, there will be a showing of the family-friendly comedy Hocus Pocus. Bring your own snacks and drinks, or purchase from one of our food trucks. This event is free for all students, faculty, and staff. A donation to the Grizzly Cupboard food pantry is encouraged.

DEI Educational Series: #InternationalStudentProblems
8 – 9 p.m.
Join alumni for a discussion on the politics, culture, and struggles of being an international student.

Saturday, October 24

Bears of the Last Decade Virtual Brunch
11 a.m. – noon
Join us in welcoming the Class of 2020 to the Alumni Association at this Bears of the Last Decade Virtual Brunch. We’ll be catching up on all things New York Tech, while welcoming a few special guests from the university community. This free event is open to alumni from the Classes of 2010 through 2020

NYIT-Vancouver Hosts Online Dance Class
3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Learn fun and energetic choreography at this Zoom dance class. Shake off all your stressors and get pumped for midterms. You will need an adequate amount of space around you and be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
