NYIT Clinic Offers Free Health Services
February 16, 2017
Through a newly established Community Free Clinic within its Family Health Care Center, NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) students and faculty members will offer free healthcare services to the Central Islip (N.Y.) community two Sunday afternoons each month.
“We are in a unique position to offer a hands-on clinical educational experience for our medical students while also providing a valuable and much-needed service to residents in the Central Islip area,” said Sonia Rivera-Martinez, D.O., assistant professor of Family Medicine and associate medical director of the Family Health Care Center.
NYITCOM physicians and students will volunteer their time to provide primary care services to individuals who are 18 years of age and older, whether or not they have insurance coverage, who otherwise could not afford health care.
For now, services include general health checks and sick visits, as well as blood pressure and other lab tests. However, the clinic hopes to involve people from NYIT School of Health Professions in the future. “Having students and faculty members in health professions working side-by-side with medical students will create an interdisciplinary and team-based environment for all students to learn a patient-centered model of care,” said Rivera-Martinez.
