NYIT Gets Out the Vote

According to a study by Tufts University, voter turnout among college students increased by more than three percent in 2016 from 45.1 percent in 2012 to 48.3 percent. Among those who were registered to vote, 68.5 percent voted in 2016, compared to 65.3 percent in 2012.

NYIT is committed to doing its part to continue to engage students. In the run-up to the midterm elections November 6, the university is hosting a series of events to increase awareness and encourage students to register to vote and engage in civil discourse.

Events On and Around Campus:

National Voter Registration Day National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) is a national holiday celebrating our democracy. Every year millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline, don’t update their registration, or aren’t sure how to register. The goal of NVRD is to make sure everyone has the opportunity to vote. Volunteers from the New York City (Manhattan) and Long Island (Old Westbury, N.Y.) campuses will help you register and provide information on political institutions, organizations, and activities.

Harlem Voter Registration Drive As part of NYIT’s Building Resilient Communities initiative, an NYIT student team will partner with The Pillars and area teens to distribute voter registration forms at St. Nicholas Avenue and 125th Street in Harlem.

New Immigrant and Refugee Visions Attend the screening of two immigrant-produced films, An American Child and Campaign for a New American. Immigrants, refugees, and immigration policy are critical issues for many American communities this election year. CSFilm’s New Immigrant and Refugee Visions (NIRV) project is a collection of documentary films produced by new immigrants that provide a unique insider perspective on the integration challenges faced by immigrants and the contributions they make to our culture, economy, and social fabric.

Civic Thursdays: Bring it to the Table Screening Examine your own assumptions and engage in civil discourse to help move our democracy forward. The event is organized by filmmaker and political activist Julie Winokur who will screen segments of her documentary, Bring it to the Table. Members of the NYIT community are invited to discuss their political views and help others understand where they are coming from.
