James von Klemperer, President of the New York-headquartered practice, Kohn Pederson Fox (KPF), kicks off a series of six presentations and student-led interviews, titled, Beyond the Envelope, within our Spring 2022 Lectures and Events series, Communities. In a live public broadcast, James von Klemperer will briefly present KPF’s project, One Vanderbilt, completed in 2017 in New York, followed by a student-led interview. This series of presentations and interviews with leading architects, is part of the SoAD Master of Architecture course, ARCH 791 Special Studies in Architecture | Beyond the Envelope, taught by Professor Tom Verebes, Ph.D.

Bio 

Experience and Qualifications

James von Klemperer FAIA RIBA is President & Design Principal at Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, where he leads a staff of over 700 architects in nine global offices.

Since joining KPF in 1983, Jamie has planned and designed projects of all scales. His work heightens the role of large buildings in making urban space, generating strong symbiotic relationships with the public realm in such projects as One Vanderbilt, Midtown Manhattan's tallest tower with a direct link to Grand Central Terminal, and New Songdo City in Incheon, South Korea, which extends this challenge to the scope of urban planning.

Jamie has lectured at Harvard, Columbia, Tsinghua, Tongji, Seoul National, and Yonsei Universities, the ESA in Paris, AMO in Lyon, and at Yale, where he taught as a Saarinen Visiting Professor. In 2018, he received the American Prize for Architecture from The Chicago Athenaeum. Jamie chairs the Board of Directors of the Skys
