Dear New York Tech Community Members,
New York Institute of Technology stands together with the Asian-American community in mourning the victims of the recent brutal killings in Georgia. We recognize that these events take place against a backdrop of rising reports of hate crimes directed towards the Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander communities. We condemn these and all acts of violence and bias.
New York Tech is committed to creating an inclusive environment where people of diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities are welcomed, respected, and valued. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force will continue its efforts to foster an environment that always welcomes and encourages individuals of all backgrounds to contribute to and be part of our university culture.
If you have experienced or witnessed acts of violence or bias on campus: In an emergency, first call 911 (all U.S. campuses). Then call Campus Security in Long Island (516.686.7781) or New York City (646.273.7789). You can find additional information on emergency and security resources here. You should also report the incident to Dean of Students Felipe Henao at Deanofstudents@nyit.edu or 516.686.1224, to ensure that appropriate action can be taken.
We encourage those of you who are feeling anxious or uneasy to please reach out to Counseling and Wellness Services at our campuses in Long Island (516.686.7683) or New York City (212.261.1773) to talk or make a virtual appointment.
Thank you,
Brian L. Harper, M.D., M.P.H.
