Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Names Mindy Haar a Fellow
July 14, 2015
NYIT nutrition expert Mindy Haar, Ph.D., is one of the newest fellows of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, a distinction that honors her professionalism and commitment to the field.
Haar serves as director of program development of the School of Health Professions’ Department of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences, including NYIT's Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals and determines the academic and professional standards of practice for nutritionists and dietitians.
“I feel proud and humbled to be recognized,” said Haar, a registered dietitian for 34 years. “I’m happy to have the opportunity and support at NYIT for the last 11 years to teach, create curricula, publish, and present, and to also have the clinical and teaching experience that was needed to be considered as a fellow.”
Haar is currently part of a team training health coaches to work in underserved populations. She's also producing a journal article on student learning in online communities.
According to a statement on the academy's website, fellows are members of the organization "who have distinguished themselves among their colleagues, as well as in their communities, by their service to the dietetics profession and by optimizing the nation’s health through food and nutrition.” Fellows must have at least five years of nutrition or dietetics employment as well as a combination of professional experience, sponsorships, research, and postgraduate education. They also must have experience as volunteers, mentors, or public speakers.
“Mindy Haar’s accomplishments, professionalism, and leadership have contributed to the success of the School of Health Professions' health sciences and nutrition programs,” said Dean Patricia Chute, Ed.D. “We are proud and pleased that she has achieved this well-deserved recognition.”
In addition to publications in scholarly journals and presentations at national conferences, Haar frequently contributes to media coverage of nutrition issues. In the past year, she was quoted in numerous publications, including Psychology Today, Newsday, and Scientific American Health After 50. She has contributed nutrition content to NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine’s gerontology case studies and wrote several modules for a new online nutrition education course for physician assistant students developed by two NYIT faculty members.
