Celebrate Black History Month 2023

February is Black History Month. Throughout the month, New York Institute of Technology will celebrate by hosting a series of events. The university also recognizes our Black alumni, students, and faculty who are doing great things in their professional and academic careers as well as in their communities. Learn more about them.

Black ’N Brunch
February 9

Kick off the school year with friendly conversations with peers while munching on a variety of brunch foods. In collaboration with the Office of Student Life and the National Society of Black Engineers.

Entrepreneurship Workshop
February 10

Participate in a panel discussion with successful Black alumni entrepreneurs and the president of the Black Chamber of Commerce as they share their experiences, empower members, and provide resources/tips to be a successful entrepreneur. This event is a collaboration between Ventures, Alumni Relations, the School of Management, and Career Success and Experiential Education

Heart Health Workshop with the American Medical Student Association

Learn about the importance of heart health and the dangers of high blood pressure in the African American community. Join us for an engaging presentation and learn how to measure blood pressure and heart rate. Participants will be encouraged to make cards to send to individuals at hospitals suffering from heart disease.

What’s Black Love?

Tap into your creativity gene and make your own “I Dig You” treat bags in this DIY Valentine’s Day special. Then join us for a “What is Black Love?” discussion and share what Black love means to you. Valentine’s Day attire: Wear anything pink, red, or white.

Black History Month Poetry Slam

Join Student Life and ROOTs for a night of spoken word poetry. Emcee Joan Leslie, two-time Queen of the South Poetry Slam champion, will present her poetry and welcome students to present their own poetry.

Black History Month Jeopardy
February 21

Participate in a game show where audience members answer trivia questions on Black history. Attire: Wear all black or a Black Student Union T-shirt.

Black Student Union Middle Ground: The Future of the Black Race in America
February 21

Join the Black Student Union for a thought-provoking conversation discussing the future of the Black race in America. Topics include, but are not limited to, the influence of social media, the music industry, generational traumas, and more.

Black History Month U.N.I.T.Y Gala
February 24
6 – 10 p.m.
Leonard’s Palazzo, 555 Northern Blvd, Great Neck, N.Y.
Hosted by the Long Island and New York City chapters of the Black Student Union, Alumni Relations, the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, and the Office of Student Life, the event is a celebration of Black history and Black culture. The theme of the gala is Shades of Melanin to express the love and beauty of different shades. The event is aimed at providing U.N.I.T.Y among our Black students at New York Tech.
