Human Resource Management Students Earn National Accolades

July 15, 2016

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the world’s largest human resources association, awarded a 2015-2016 Superior Merit Award to the NYIT SHRM student chapter for providing superior growth and development opportunities to its members. NYIT is one of 65 schools to receive the award; more than 200 schools from across the United States applied.

As part of its evaluation process, SHRM looks at the number of activities student chapters complete during the merit award cycle. Among other activities, the NYIT SHRM chapter sponsored professional enrichment events, held a career forum, attended programs at two professional chapters, engaged alumni to participate in monthly chapter meetings, addressed a group of high school students about the HR profession, assisted at a professional chapter’s conference, mentored students as part of the School of Management’s Discovery 360 Program, and participated successfully in the SHRM Eastern Region Case Competition.

“These chapters truly represent the future of the HR profession,” said Susan Post, SHRM-SCP, east divisional director at SHRM and the lead for SHRM’s student programs. “Their achievements go above and beyond their everyday academic and work commitments, and we applaud the positive impact their efforts have on their schools, their local communities, and beyond.”

In addition, Reshma Shivdasani (pictured right above), a student in the human resource management and labor relations graduate program, received the prestigious 2016 Sherman Award. The $1,000 scholarship, awarded annually by the NYC SHRM Chapter, goes to the human resources student who has been the most active, supportive member of her or his college’s SHRM student chapter.

Colleges with an SHRM student chapter in New York City are allowed to nominate only one student for the award. Shivdasani is the third human resource management and labor relations graduate student to earn this award. Archana Srinivasan (M.S. ’10) and Brendan Feifer (M.S. ’15) won the award in 2010 and 2014, respectively. All three awardees were present for this year’s award ceremony.
