New York Tech to Host Cybersecurity Hackathon

On April 30, NYIT College of Engineering and Computing Sciences will host its eighth cybersecurity hackathon challenge in the last three years for students on its campuses in New York City and Long Island, New York and Vancouver, British Columbia.
Competing teams of New York Institute of Technology students will face 15 cryptographic challenges of increasing difficulty levels. Teams are required to solve each challenge before the location of the next challenged is unveiled. More than 75 students are expected to participate in the hackathon, which is sponsored by Cybersafe Solutions, LLC, a 24/7/365 Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP) that monitors and manages security devices and systems and supports its global clients with Extended Detection & Response (XDR) security threat detection and incident response solutions that incorporate endpoint, cloud and network telemetry for next-level visibility.
The competition will be hosted remotely using New York Tech’s custom-designed hackathon platform created to help streamline the management of the six-hour event, including registration, sponsor information, scoring, tutorials, prizes, and more. Industry professionals judging the hackathon are from New York Tech and Cybersafe Solutions, among others.
“The cybersecurity industry is demanding that more and more of its workforce candidates be able to demonstrate hands-on knowledge. Competitions like this are a great way for students to develop new skills as well as showcase the skills they already have to the professionals judging the competition,” said Michael Nizich, Ph.D., director of the Entrepreneurship and Technology Innovation Center (ETIC) and adjunct assistant professor of computer science.
“Education is key to the future of cybersecurity, and it is important for us to support hackathons and other competitions to help build the talent pipeline for our industry,” said Mark Petersen, vice present of sales at Cybersafe Solutions.
According to Cybersecurity Ventures, there will be 3.5 million unfilled cybersecurity jobs around the world this year.
