News Byte: Summer Meet and Greets

Pictured: New and incoming students gathered on the Long Island and New York City campuses for Summer Meet and Greet events, where they had the opportunity to re-energize and re-engage before the start of the fall semester.

In late July, the Office of Student Life hosted two Summer Meet and Greet events for students on the Long Island and New York City campuses. New and incoming students had the opportunity to re-energize and re-engage before classwork and projects take center stage on September 8. More than 100 students came out to make new friends and reconnect with classmates.

After a year and a half of physical distancing and remote engagement, students at both campuses came together to participate in games and ice breakers designed to spark conversation and help students find common ground with their peers.

The Long Island event was held at the NYIT de Seversky Mansion, while New York City students gathered at Cop Cot, Central Park. On Long Island, students partook in games and outside activities on the mansion’s lawn, while New York City students played board games on the first floor of 1855 Broadway (Edward Guiliano Global Center).

Event organizers Rebecca Weintraub, associate director of student engagement at the New York City campus, and Deanna Bertini, assistant director of student engagement at the Long Island campus, noted that many students had not met each other ahead of time, but the events provided a chance to make new friends before the official start of classes, much like an in-person orientation session might have done.
