News Byte: Training Program Prepares Potential Healthcare Workers to Fill Important Roles

Ninety-five people have successfully completed courses in the inaugural session of the New York Tech Healthcare Service Training Project, which comprises five certificate programs, including Basic Life Support, Home Healthcare Aide, Medical Coding, Personal Trainer, and Rehabilitation Therapy Aide. Approximately 85 people are enrolled in the second (summer) session of the program, which was launched in 2021 by the School of Health Professions to help address the need for skilled healthcare workers in the greater New York metropolitan region.

The program is geared toward under- or unemployed individuals, as well as young people diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, veterans, and other Long Islanders eager to pursue careers in healthcare. The school received a $200,000 grant from the New York State Department of Labor and the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council to train healthcare workers to meet short- and long-term workforce needs in Long Island and New York City.

The program has attracted a diverse group of participants, including individuals from communities throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and some of New York City’s five boroughs, and various age groups, including high school students and people looking to change the course of their careers.
