NYIT-Vancouver Welcomes Alumni, Celebrates Class of 2016

NYIT-Vancouver celebrated with alumni and new graduates in events held on May 26-27. NYIT Provost Rahmat Shoureshi, Ph.D., and Director of Alumni Relations Jennifer Kelly Campbell joined NYIT-Vancouver Campus Dean Paul Dangerfield and Career Services Coordinator Lee Harris in welcoming approximately 35 graduates to the campus’s annual alumni reception on the evening of May 26. The next day, university leaders and faculty honored 44 new alumni as members of the NYIT Class of 2016. The graduates, who come from more than a dozen countries, have earned master’s degrees in business administration (M.B.A.) and information, network, and computer security (M.S.). Alumni were pleased to re-connect with former classmates and faculty at the reception held at the Gallery Café near NYIT’s Vancouver campus. In a brief welcome address, Dangerfield told the group, “We are extremely proud of the achievements of all our students, and of the fact that NYIT-Vancouver is producing outstanding individuals who are immediately contributing to businesses and society in our communities.”

At the May 27 graduation ceremony, Dangerfield greeted the graduates and guests, noting that “this year we are especially pleased to see Vancouver’s first graduating class of the M.S. program in information, network, and computer security.” In addition to two master’s programs represented by this year’s graduates, two additional master’s programs have recently been approved by British Columbia education authorities; a Master of Science in Instructional Technology and Master of Science in Energy Management will be offered starting in the fall 2016 semester.

NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., sent a video message to congratulate the new graduates, and Provost Shoureshi shared a highlight video of the main NYIT Commencement held in Old Westbury, N.Y., on May 22. In his remarks, the president noted, “an NYIT degree will always deliver value in an uncertain, changing global marketplace.” Shoureshi advised graduates to face their challenges with “adaptability, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a willingness to embrace change.” Both said that NYIT alumni are always welcome on the university’s global campuses, which offer lifelong career services and other alumni benefits.

Faculty members Leo de Sousa of NYIT School of Engineering and Computing Sciences and Sinan Caykoylu, Ph.D., of NYIT School of Management offered congratulations on behalf of the faculty, and Shoureshi officially conferred the NYIT degrees.

The Class of 2016 NYIT-Vancouver graduate speaker, software engineer and web developer Vinh Luc Tran (M.S. ’16), told his classmates, “As we leave NYIT today and walk into the next chapter of our lives, know that the sacrifices we have made and will make in the future reap the greatest rewards.”
