NYITCOM and CUNY Lehman College Team Up On Medical Education

On November 9 at NYIT de Seversky Mansion, representatives from NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) and CUNY Lehman College signed two agreements that will allow qualified Lehman students to attend NYITCOM to earn a combined B.S./D.O. degree as well as gain early admission to one of the largest osteopathic medical schools in the United States.

Under the first agreement—the 3+4 combined B.S./D.O. program—high school students with SAT scores of 1,200 or higher and at least a 90 percent average may be accepted to Lehman College as part of a pre-med program. In their third-year at Lehman, those undergraduate students who have maintained GPAs of at least 3.5 and earned high MCAT scores may interview with NYITCOM faculty members for entry into the D.O. program. After completing the first year curriculum at NYITCOM the students will earn a bachelor’s degree from Lehman College and after completing their four-year curriculum at NYITCOM, they will earn a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from NYITCOM.

The second agreement allows Lehman students with above average GPA’s and MCAT scores to gain early admissions into NYITCOM’s D.O. program. Undergraduate students may interview in the fall semester of their senior year at Lehman, giving them an early opportunity to fill one of the limited openings available to first-year NYITCOM applicants. This is a 4+4 program, meaning that after the students accepted as part of the program earn their four-year degree from Lehman, they will begin their four-year D.O. education at NYITCOM.

“These agreements highlight our shared mission focused on student success and service to the community,” said Harriet “Niki” Fayne, Ph.D., interim provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at Lehman College. “We know that our students will be welcomed into a focused, warm, and supportive environment invested in their success, and we are very much looking forward to hearing about how our successful alumni and our future NYIT grads will advance the field of osteopathic medicine.”

Wolfgang Gilliar, D.O., dean of NYITCOM, added: “At NYITCOM, it is our mission to train future physicians who will make for a better society. These agreements are a great opportunity for us to build upon each other’s strengths as we prepare students to become compassionate, confident, and highly competent osteopathic doctors.”

NYITCOM has similar B.S./D.O. affiliations with SUNY Old Westbury, SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Geneseo, CUNY Queens College, Arkansas State University, University of Central Arkansas, and Ouachita Baptist University. In addition, NYITCOM has 4+4 early admissions agreements with SUNY-Stony Brook University, SUNY Old Westbury, CUNY Brooklyn College, CUNY Queens College, Adelphi University, Arkansas State University, University of Central Arkansas, Ouachita Baptist University, Harding University, and Baptist College of Health Sciences.
