Students Navigate Their College and Post-College Careers

Beginning in September, the Office of International and Experiential Education on the New York City campus hosted a series of three events to help students in different stages of their college careers.

On September 26, freshmen participated in a scavenger hunt. Navigate Your College focused on helping students get to know the different offices and departments on campus in a fun way. The students were broken up into teams. Each team was given a card with the name of an office or department, and they had to find it. Once there, they spoke with a staff member and learned more about the department.

The next event, Navigate Your Community, was geared towards helping students get to know New York City. On October 11, they went on a scavenger hunt around Manhattan. They were tasked with answering questions about the city’s rich history and culture, all while getting to know its diverse communities. The team that completed all the tasks and had the best score won prizes, including an Amazon Echo and tickets to visit Top of the Rock, the observation deck at the top of Rockefeller Center.

Navigate Your Career, limited to 10 students, was a one-day externship hosted by New York startup Work Awesome on October 24. The annual event focuses on the future of work. Students had the opportunity to take part in panel discussions and workshops, as well as network with executives and listen to their stories.

“The Work Awesome Conference was a great experience to network with people from different backgrounds and talk about current issues like employee turnover and the future of talent,” said Ann Kathrin Zilles, a senior in NYIT School of Management. “Being from Germany, it was amazing to meet people from my country since this event was organized by Felix Zeltner, the co-founder of Work Awesome, [who is] German.”

Students also learned tips on how to be more effective and successful at work. Dharv Hitendrakumar Joshi, a master’s candidate in computer science, attended workshops throughout the day and picked up many helpful tips. One that stood out for him: “A vision without action is always a daydream, and action without vision is a nightmare.”
