For members of the Class of 2020, the day they’ve been working toward is finally is here! On Sunday, June 21, New York Tech graduates will gather together virtually to celebrate their accomplishments at the 59th annual commencement ceremony.
Beginning at 11 a.m. (EDT) and streamed on nyit.edu/commencement, the main graduation ceremony includes speeches by university administration and a video montage honoring the graduates, followed by the big event: the conferral of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees to students who’ve attended the Long Island and New York City campuses as well as those who’ve completed their degrees online. In addition, the Class of 2020’s Emily Tafur will sing the National Anthem and student orator Ashley Dent will address fellow graduates.
After the main commencement ceremony, at approximately 11:30 a.m., virtual ceremonies for the School of Architecture and Design, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering and Computing Sciences, School of Health Professions, and School of Management will include addresses by the college/school deans, recognition of honors and awards, and slides of individual degree recipients—many of whom provided photos and inspirational messages in celebration of their accomplishments.
Preparations for the virtual commencement have included a special commencement toolkit complete with printable signs, social media filters, and Zoom backgrounds for virtual watch parties; an online “wall” of greetings and well wishes from faculty, staff, and alumni; a special commencement edition of the Old Westbury student-produced Campus Slate; the distribution of caps, gowns, and diploma covers; an online program listing all candidates for graduation; and more.
All participants are encouraged to post congratulatory messages during the virtual event on New York Tech’s social media channels using #NewYorkTech2020.
All recordings will be available for viewing after the event at nyit.edu/commencement.
