Student Profile: Larabe Imran
Bright Experience
Larabe Imran is gaining first-hand experience through her on-campus jobs and involvement with the Student Government Association, which she says will help prepare her for life after graduation. She sat down with The Box to talk about her new role and how New York Tech is preparing her for the future.
Why did you choose New York Tech?
It was one of my top choices for college because of the well-established curriculum in the School of Management, the location was ideal for me, and the professors have great backgrounds. Additionally, they offer great scholarships for international students.
What is your major and why did you choose it?
My major is marketing. The reason I chose it is because it is a diverse career choice. As a marketing student, you are exposed to different subject areas and disciplines.
Tell us a little about what you do outside of your studies.
I am a student ambassador for the School of Management. As [former] Dean Jess Boronico said, we (student ambassadors) are the “mini deans.” Our job is to answer any questions students have regarding the School of Management and help them in any way possible. As a student ambassador, I was appointed to freshmen students to whom I reach out weekly to make sure they have a smooth experience. I have served as the event chair for the Marketing Club, worked as a student engagement coordinator for the School of Management, and was a part of the social media team for the Office of Student Engagement. In my roles with the School of Management and Office of Student Engagement, I create flyers and post to their social media accounts and make sure students are engaging with the posts.
You are also the director of marketing and public relations for the SGA on the New York City campus. Can you talk about that experience and why you joined?
I enjoy being involved in different clubs and organizations on campus. I have been a board member of several clubs, worked three jobs on campus, and am a student ambassador. Joining the SGA was next on the list for me. The experience has been great. I have been handling its Instagram page, and we have had training and a few senate meetings. Working with the other SGA members is really fun.
What have been your most rewarding experiences at New York Tech?
Working with the Office of Student Engagement and being a peer tutor. I am able to help my peers with their academic and personal goals.
How is New York Tech preparing you for the future?
New York Tech has helped me gain a better understanding of how to apply for jobs and internships, prepare for interviews, and create a résumé that stands out. Having worked on campus has also given me a first-hand experience of being in a professional environment.
