Student Eligibility, Registration and Payment

Who is eligible to participate in New York Tech Advance?

High School students must have a sophomore or higher standing and a minimum cumulative average of a B (80 or higher). An academic department, in consultation with the Academic Dean, may impose additional and/or stricter criteria for a given course, at their discretion.

It is the responsibility of each School or Organization to ensure that students are properly advised, have had adequate preparation to reasonably ensure success in each course, and meet the eligibility criteria for enrolling in each course.

How many courses can a student take each semester?

The number of courses that a student can take for college credit depends on the number of courses offered by your high school and the student’s own academic capabilities. The work is demanding and all students taking college credit courses should be properly advised by their high school guidance counselor prior to registration.

College Credit and Transfer Policies

How does the New York Tech Advance program compare to AP (Advanced Placement)?

New York Tech Advance awards college credit based on the grade that the student earns for the entire class, once they successfully complete it. AP courses allow students to earn college credit based only on the score they receive on the AP exam. In both cases, a minimum grade or score is required by the college that they will attend.

Can students transfer New York Tech credits to other schools?

Yes! Most colleges will accept New York Tech credits. We highly recommend that students contact the colleges that they are interested in attending to ask about specific transfer credit policies. Most colleges require a minimum grade of “C-” or better (potentially higher depending on the major).

How do students obtain a copy of their transcript?

Instructions on requesting a transcript can be found on nyit.edu/advance.

Grading Policies

What is the grading policy?

The undergraduate grading policy at New York Tech must be followed as indicated in the most current catalog.

Will New York Tech grades affect a student’s GPA at the college/university the student eventually attends?

Most institutions do not use course grades for transfer credit in their determination of a student’s GPA at that school. However, the grade they earn in your course is part of their permanent record and will count toward their GPA if they attend New York Tech.

How do I submit grades for a course?

Instructors will be sent a grade roster for each course they are teaching. Grade rosters must be completed and returned to New York Tech within seven days of the last day of classes. Students taking New York Tech courses are subject to the same rights and responsibilities outlined in the academic standards section of the current undergraduate catalog.
