Major Requirements

Required Courses (both tracks) Credits:
MMNM 826 Applications in Teaching and Learning 1
This is course is intended to give Scholars experience acting as instructors and group discussion facilitators outside of the traditional laboratory setting. The CO M's two main avenues for such activities are lectures and Cased Based Leaming (CBL) group facilitation. Students are required to select, prepare, and deliver a single one-hour academic lecture/classroom session before 1st and/or 2nd year medical students. Scholars select the topics they would like to present and the faculty member who will mentor them on the lecture. Additionally, each Scholar is required to attend at least 2 CBL sessions (1st and/or 2nd year students) selected by the course director in association with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and the faculty facilitators of the selected CBL groups.

MMNM 830 Doctor-Patient Relationship Lab Training I 1.5
This course provides lab training in how to supervise and instruct medical students in the doctor - patient relations. Students will learn how to teach the format of the medical interview, identify the technique of verbal and non - verbal communication, how to teach the principles of empathic interviewing, instruct how to take a complete history of the patient, instruct how to perform a thorough examination with proper documentation, formulate a differential diagnosis and how to present the patient.

MMNM 832 Academic Clinical Medicine 3
In addition to contributing to the education of physicians. and contribution of new knowledge through research, patient care is the third element of academic medicine. In this course, Academic Medicine Scholars will be presented with opportunities for continued clinical exposure during their scholar year and to achieve competency in presenting a case and facilitating group discussion as it pertains to basic anatomy, histology. physiology, pathology. osteopathic findings, laboratory and radiology findings, and societal implications of cases encountered in clinics. The Academic Medicine Scholars will facilitate discussion incorporating learning theory, processes, and pedagogical models of medical education, which the scholars which are introduced in earlier modules.

MMNM 834 Doctor-Patient Relationship Lab Training II 1.5
During this course students will explore theoretical frameworks of teaching, the establishing of patient rapport, history taking, physical exam, and clinical reasoning to educate medical students. Students will participate in supervised teaching of small group learning activities. The skills taught in this course will serve as a bridge between didactic educational approaches and techniques. The course will teach students how to develop skills in small group facilitation and debriefing osteopathic medical students. Students will be introduced to the simulation educational frameworks and strategies

MMPU 710 Concepts, Practice, and Issues in Biostatistics 3
Prerequisite: Course is limited to Neuromusculoskeletal Sciences students

This course provides training for students to gain competence in statistics relevant to an academic physician. This course consists of a series of highly interactive activities designed to familiarize Scholars with concepts, practices, and issues in Biostatistics. Scholars will participate in group discussion of assigned chapter readings and published journal articles. They will develop competency in analyzing biomedical data algorithmically and through a standard software kit. And they will give presentations on an exemplar research project on the statistical soundness of its approach and claims.

MMOM 830 Immersive Teaching in OMM Principles and Practice I 4
This course aims to immerse Osteopathic Medical students in the methods and practice of teaching Osteopathic Manual Medicine. Through intensive study of the materials, clinical exposure, lab preparatory sessions and practice assessment item writing, students will develop their ability to teach in large and small group settings in which they will become more adept in conveying osteopathic philosophy, principles of diagnosis and treatment methods. Students will also prepare scholarly work in the form of an osteopathic case write up for presentation as well as have other opportunities for academic enrichment in osteopathy.

MMPU 735 Methods and Research in Medical Education 3
This course consists of a series of sessions and workshops that examine the processes, methodologies and applications of medical education and medical education research relevant for the academic physician. Students will search, evaluate and discuss medical education literature and learn about pedagogical models of medical education, writing of learning objectives and examination items, and the development of medical education research studies. Students will be able to apply what they learn in this course to the active teaching components of the Academic Medicine Scholar's curriculum -lectures, OMM and Anatomy teaching practicums.

MMPU 820 Practicum in Clinically Oriented Anatomy 3
Prerequisite: Course is limited to Neuromusculoskeletal Sciences students

All Academic Medicine Scholars will work alongside Anatomy and Neuroanatomy Faculty in the Anatomy lab. Academic Medicine Scholars will perform prosections and demonstrate them before students, will assist in teaching labs, and will participate in scheduled review sessions and practice exam sessions.

MMPU 834 Introductory Research in Biomedical and Clinical Sciences I 2
Students will work under the guidance of a Faculty Mentor in a clinical, biomedical, or any related field. Students are responsible for selecting a Faculty Mentor who will collaborate with the Faculty Mentor in developing and conducting a research project which they will then continue through the Scholar year. The research project should be appropriate for the available resources, time, and general level of knowledge and expertise of the students. As the project begins, students are required to develop personalized learning objectives, that describe what will be learned, specifically, from involvement in their research project. Research activities will include any of the following: literature review, project design, experimentation and/or data gathering, data analysis and reporting results in papers and other presentations

This course consists of a series of highly interactive activities designed to familiarize Academic Medicine Scholars with the entire research process. Academic Medicine Scholars individually lead discussions of peer reviewed journal articles on neuromusculoskeletal and related topics, write NIH style grant proposals, peer-review scientific manuscripts, and give presentations on their own research projects for peer evaluation.

MMNM 730 Advanced Concepts in Clinical Research 3
The purpose of this course is to provide training for students in activities pertinent to an academic physician, with a focus on clinical research. The course should prepare students to critically review medical literature, lead journal clubs, prepare clinical topic and case presentations appropriate for activities at University teaching hospitals (tumor board, grand rounds, etc ...), and to discuss issues pertinent to clinical research at an advanced level.

MMPU 715 Epidemiology 3
This course is intended to provide students with a working knowledge of the basic concepts and methods of epidemiology. There is a focus on the acquisition and interpretation of information about disease occurrence, disease treatment and health behaviors. In this course, students will learn about the application of epidemiology to understanding the occurrence and control of public health conditions such as infectious diseases and chronic diseases. At the completion of this course, students will be expected to be able to understand basic epidemiological concepts and methods.

MMOM 820 Introduction to Teaching OMM Principles and Practice 2
Prerequisite: Course is limited to Neuromusculoskeletal Sciences students

Academic Medicine Scholars serve as table trainers for 1st and 2nd year students. They set up labs, run cameras, facilitate a workshop pod of students, attend lectures and planning meetings, and are involved in student assessment and the faculty evaluation process. Individual scholars participate in scheduled OMM clinic sessions with OMM faculty members.

MMPU 826 Advanced Research in Biomedical and Clinical Sciences I 4
Prerequisite: Course is limited to Neuromusculoskeletal Sciences students

Throughout the spring and fall semesters, each Academic Medicine Scholar will work with a specific Research Mentor on a designated research project. Both Academic Medicine Scholars and Faculty members will have input in the pairing process. Academic Medicine Scholars will work under the Research Mentor and will produce at least one paper or poster presentation suitable for presentation to a scientific or professional society. (Acceptance of this paper or poster for delivery or publication is not mandatory for successful completion of these courses.)

Prerequisite: Course is limited to Neuromusculoskeletal Sciences students

Throughout the spring and fall semesters, each Academic Medicine Scholar will work with a specific Research Mentor on a designated research project. Both Academic Medicine Scholars and Faculty members will have input in the pairing process. Academic Medicine Scholars will work under the Research Mentor and will produce at least one paper or poster presentation suitable for presentation to a scientific or professional society. (Acceptance of this paper or poster for delivery or publication is not mandatory for successful completion of these courses.)

MMPU 832 Advanced Research in Biomedical and Clinical Sciences III 4
Throughout the year, each Scholar works with a specific Research Mentor on a designated research project that is assigned via a scholar-mentor match process at the beginning of the year. Both Scholars and Faculty Members will have input in the pairing process. Scholars will train and work under the Research Mentor and will produce at least one paper or poster presentation suitable for presentation to a scientific or professional society. Acceptance of this paper or poster for delivery or publication is not mandatory for successful completion of these courses. Students are required to work on their research projects throughout the year and will be enrolled in research credits during all three semesters. Letter grades are assigned by faculty mentors.
