Public Loan Forgiveness Resources

Below are resources for students to find out more about the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. The Office of Student Financial Aid encourages you to use these resources to understand the program and see if you qualify.

Requirements to Qualify for PSLF
  • You must work in certain types of nonprofit organization.
  • You must meet the full time employment requirement of at least 30 hours per week.
  • Only direct loans are eligible for PSLF. Primary care loans, loans for disadvantaged students, and private loans do not qualify for PSLF.
  • Qualifying repayment plans include all of the income-driven repayment plans.
  • You must make 120 qualifying monthly payments. In-school status, grace periods deferments, and forbearances, do not count towards the 120 qualifying monthly payments.
  • After the 120 qualifying monthly payments you must submit the PSLF application for loan forgiveness.

If you are working toward PSLF, you should complete and submit the Employment Certification for Public Service Loan Forgiveness Form annually, or when you change employers. If you do not periodically submit the Employment Certification Form, then at the time you apply for forgiveness you will be required to submit an Employment Certification form for each employer where you worked while making the required 120 qualifying monthly payments.

It is the responsibility of the borrower to make sure that all criteria for PSLF are met.
