New York Tech Embraces the Season of Giving

New York Tech students, faculty, and staff are embracing the season of giving with numerous initiatives that will run through this year’s holiday season and provide needed food, clothing, medical support, and other services to local community members.

In October, many groups on campus participated in Breast Cancer Awareness Month: the American Medical Students Association, Girl Up, Delta Epsilon Pi, and the Community Service Center walked in the annual Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach on October 20. And the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams were part of the cheer squad at the Sid Jacobsen Jewish Community Center’s Stronger than Cancer 5K on October 13. Lacrosse team members also volunteered at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s One Walk on October 20.

Throughout the holidays, groups and individuals on every campus participated in the season of giving. On November 26, Dean of Students Tiffani Blake and five New York Tech students met up at 5:00 a.m. at Chelsea Piers to participate in FeedingNYC, an annual initiative that has prepared and delivered more than 70,000 boxes of food to families over the past 17 years. On November 12, NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) hosted a blood drive in partnership with the New York Blood Center. NYITCOM’s Office of Student Life and Student Government Association’s Giving Tree Event collected gifts for children ages 6 to 15 at the Glen Cove Boys and Girls Club. The Office of Financial Affairs filled 15 backpacks with hats, gloves, toiletries, and other necessities and collected other items that were donated to the Oscar Romero home, sponsored by The Inn. On December 14, the NYITCOM chapter of the Student Osteopathic Medical Association screened and assisted Special Olympics New York participants.

Leading up to Thanksgiving, Dean of Students Tiffani Blake and five New York Tech students met up at 5:50 a.m. at Chelsea Piers to participate in FeedingNYC.

Other ongoing activities include the Debra Vogel Student Advancement Program’s food drive for City Harvest and its ongoing support of the United States War Dog’s Association by providing service dogs with the highest-grade military gear and supportive resources for their protection. On November 27, 10 M.B.A. students at NYIT-Vancouver volunteered to decorate, prepare gift boxes, and sort clothing for the Covenant House, which provides basic needs for youth experiencing homelessness. And the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program held its annual winter wear drive for The Bowery Mission in lower Manhattan.

Also in November, students at NYITCOM-Arkansas teamed up to collect canned goods for the Cherry Valley Food Pantry, about an hour south of Jonesboro. The Pediatrics RSO and the Christian Medical and Dental Association are holding a toy drive to benefit Arkansas Children’s Hospital. And the Class of 2022 is holding a coat drive for two area transition homes. The women’s coats will be delivered to the Family Crisis Center and the men’s coats will go to John 3:16 Ministries.

Ten M.B.A. students at NYIT-Vancouver volunteered to decorate, prepare gift boxes, and sort clothing for the Covenant House.

In November, students from NYITCOM-Arkansas delivered canned goods to the Cherry Valley Food Pantry. 2023 Class President Brian Dreher and 2022 Class President Dakarai Moton delivered the food items.

The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity program collected hats, scarves, and gloves for The Bowery Mission in lower Manhattan.
