Record Number Graduates from NYIT-Vancouver

The largest class in NYIT-Vancouver’s history graduated on May 28. Family and friends gathered at a commencement ceremony at the Orpheum Theatre to celebrate the Class of 2019. A total of 358 graduates—more than double the number in Vancouver’s Class of 2018—earned an M.B.A., with a specialty in management or finance (120 graduates); an M.S. in energy management (47 graduates); or an M.S. in internet, network, and computer security (191 graduates).

A total of 358 students graduated on May 28, the largest class in NYIT-Vancouver’s history.

The master’s recipients crossed the stage to receive diplomas from Associate Provost Lou Reinisch, Ph.D., and either Assistant Professor Tokunbo Makanju, Ph.D., representing the Department of Computer Science; Sinan Caykoylu, Ph.D., assistant professor in NYIT School of Management; or Remi Charron, Ph.D., associate professor of energy management.

Students in Vancouver represent more than 20 nations, and many international graduates find work in Canada, staying in the country for the short or long term. The night before graduation, more than 150 alumni gathered for Vancouver’s annual alumni reception at the Hotel Georgia. Attendees mingled with former classmates and faculty mentors and greeted Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations Patrick Minson, M.B.A.

Graduates heard congratulations from Campus Dean Irene Young and Reinisch, who told them to “apply the perspective, the knowledge, and the skills that you have acquired to improve both the local and the global landscape … solving problems through technology and using both your intelligence and your compassion.” Valedictorian Brijal Patel (M.S. ’19), described how he learned “when you replace ‘fail’ with ‘learn’ in your personal dictionary, the experience becomes less daunting, and you focus on growth rather than defeat.”
