Experiential Education is a hands-on form of learning that begins with a concrete experience. After solving a problem, learners reflect on the process and are able to apply lessons more broadly to their lives. Experiential Education will make you more attractive to employers who seek candidates with practical experience and evidence of successful skill application. We offer several ways for you to get that experience:
Internships
An internship can help you see firsthand how academic theory is applied in the workplace while making connections and networking with industry professionals. As a bonus, approximately 80% of all New York Tech interns are offered continued employment with their internship employers.
Internship Certificate Program
When you participate in our Internship Certificate Program (ICP), you'll get more than work experience. We'll support your experience by ensuring that you meet your learning goals, develop skills employers want, and get evaluations from your internship supervisor that you can use in recommendations and on your LinkedIn profile. Contact the Office of Career Success and Experiential Education at career@nyit.edu for more information.
Co-ops (Cooperative Education)
Co-op, or cooperative education, is an experiential education program in which New York Tech students can alternate a period of academic study in the classroom with full-time co-op employment in positions directly related to their academic and/or career interests. This combination of university study and full-time employment during a student's junior or senior year provides an integrated learning experience that enhances their academic experience and career development. Cooperative Education New York Tech now offers a Co-op option for College of Engineering and Computing Science students. Find out more.
Micro-Internship
Do you want or need an internship, but don't have 20 or more hours a week to commit? Apply for a paid, project-based internship through Parker Dewey! Most micro-internships are remote work opportunities.
Volunteering
Volunteering is a great way to apply your skills and knowledge to public work, build your network, experience a new industry and enhance your resume. New York Tech's volunteer program is called Consultants for the Public Good.
Consultants for the Public Good
Consultants for the Public Good connects New York Tech students, faculty, staff, and alumni with non-profit organizations for community-based, project-based and/or skill-based volunteer opportunities. This can be particularly exciting for students studying on a visa as they can gain vital US workplace experience, without fear of interrupting their time here. Additionally, since the program is project-based, the time commitment is less than an internship, which makes it easier for busy students to gain experience each semester.
Contact Askia VanOmmeren at avanomme@nyit.edu for more questions on volunteerism and civic engagement at New York Tech.
Student Clubs and Professional Organizations
New York Tech has dozens of campus groups, clubs and organizations you can join. As you collaborate with other students, faculty and staff, you will develop valuable skills, including team-building, leadership, budgeting, event planning, time management, and interpersonal communication.
To see an up-to-date listing of all of our clubs and organizations, check out CampusGroups at campusgroups.nyit.edu (New York Tech login required).
